Only the Brave

‘I will teach my boys to be dangerous men’ is the first lines of a poem which appeared on my feed this morning. I have been taking a big step away from ‘socials’ but every now and then they do chuck up a big kick of inspiration.

The type of dangerous men the man is describing are boys who are a light in the dark, think before they descend and know love is found at 3 in the morning not through porn. He is talking about the 21st century danger which isn’t as glamorous as the cave men walking the globe, Columbus sailing the 7 seas or world war heroes climbing the trenches. Possibly, luckily for us raising children in the UK, we have a more quiet, slow burn sort of danger. The loss of quiet, the loss of innocence and in some cases sanity. It’s also a danger that is at once very present and sometimes not there at all and because of that there is no glory in today’s dangerous men.

Not using a smart phone is brave, today is almost as rebellious as asking for votes for women in some places but is a quiet every day act. Not letting your kids sit, stuck to a screen being raised by YouTube is brave and rebellious but no one is going to see the hard work you are putting in. Persuading your children to reach for their own creativity and intelligence over Google and AI is asking for effort which is not willingly given but will one day provide quiet rewards. Teaching your children to sit quietly in the woods to reconnect with themselves and nature takes patience and creativity but no one is going to understand it’s worth until your little warrior grows up in a sustainable way, saving the planet one invisible, unthanked step at a time but if everyone took these steps with no praise, no notice, no likes then our planet would become healthy.

I will not only raise dangerous men and women but I will take a little time to seek out and tip my hat to the fellow silent warriors of the 21st century. It was a really good poem!!
